D.O.C. Guidelines

Philosophy

    To aid in General and Reconstructive Surgery by providing service, training, education.

    A private, nonprofit organization, Doctors On Call (D.O.C.), is an international independent medical outreach organization, with a team committed to providing surgical aid wherever needed in the Caribbean, regardless of religion, politics or sex.

Mission

    DOC is committed to delivering efficient, high quality surgical healthcare services by consistently providing excellence in:

      - Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
      - Community Outreach Programs
      - Training of health professionals
      - And, dignity to all persons

Invitation for Mission

    - Doctors On Call, will work with host country once invited by appropriate official source (ie. government, hospital, medical school, local medical/surgical society)
    - Doctors On Call, will work with local plastic surgeons and have a liaison with the host organizations

Plan for the Mission

    - Proper planning is imperative - (mission purpose).
    - Appropriate scheduling for surgery, clinics, education, theater time etc. – taking into consideration local policies, etc.
    - DOC will work in conjunction with schedules of local plastic surgeons
    - DOC will plan for personnel and equipment as well as specific details (documents, health needs, equipment, transportation, food, lodging, etc.)
    - DOC will provide documentation of team credentials

The Mission

    - Surgery is to be done specialists, all being properly credentialed and have appropriate hospital privileges in their home country (U.S.A./Canada). The surgical team leader will be Board Certified.
    - Includes surgery training, teaching (formal lectures, where appropriate)
    - DOC will work to facilitate patients for critical surgeries overseas (where procedure cannot be conducted in local hospital)
    - DOC members will not conduct experimental or untried procedures.
    - Aesthetic surgery should and will not be part of our missions
    - DOC will make available a group/committee to deal with untoward events
    - All media contacts will be discussed between DOC and hosts officials
    - DOC will determine parameters/facilities for what can be done
    - DOC will maintain records with photos - kept by both host facility and visiting team
    - DOC team will arrange with local surgeons, appropriate short and long term post-operative care of the patients.

    - Urology

Mission follow-up

    - Ongoing future trips
    - Further assistance (books, equipment, teaching aids, other specialty doctors)
    - Possible exchange programs
    - Final reports (cases, numbers, problems, suggestions for future quality improvements, etc.)

General

    - Use only certified/senior personnel
    - Adhere to high standards of quality of surgery, care and teaching
    - Be sensitive to host needs and policies
    - Support and promote the spirit of volunteerism and altruism
    - Be a Good Guest!
